An event ticket with its own QR code

A ticket proves someone's entitled to come in, and tells them where to be. Each page shows the event, date, doors time, venue, seat and who it admits, along with a QR code of that ticket's unique code. It works on a phone or printed, and you can make one per guest from a spreadsheet.

When to use it

  • A small concert, supper club or workshop has sold its places and needs something to check at the door.
  • Guests paid by another route and you want to send a ticket each.
  • A fundraising dinner has assigned tables.
  • One buyer has paid for four people and you want a single ticket that admits four.

What a good one includes

  • A code that's different on every ticket and hard to guess.
  • The holder's name, which gives you something to compare if two people show the same code.
  • Doors time as well as start time, because queues form around the first one.
  • Venue name and street address.
  • How many it admits, and the seat if seats are assigned.
  • Anything guests need to bring or know, in the notes.

Make one by saying what you need

Text it, type it or say it, the way you'd tell a colleague:

Ticket for Amara Cole, The Lantern Room jazz night, March 14 at 8pm, doors 7:30, table 6, admits 2, $40.

Worth knowing. The QR code opens a check-in screen for anyone signed in to your workspace, so scan it with a phone camera at the door. The first check-in stands, and a second scan of the same ticket says it's already been used, with the time. Staff need their own login. A ticket page takes no payment, so sell the place first and send the ticket after.

Questions

How do I check tickets at the door?

Read or scan the code and tick it off your own guest list. Any QR scanner shows the code as text, and the code is printed on the ticket too.

Can I send different tickets to many people?

Yes. Keep the guest list in a spreadsheet and make one ticket for each row, each with its own code.

Should I print the price on a ticket?

Only if you want to. Some places have rules on ticket price display and resale, so check if you're selling to the public.
