Browser Extension Privacy
The short version: the extension takes a screenshot, or a page's text, only when you ask it to, and hands it to programmable.page in your browser. It never reads your browsing, never signs in on its own, and keeps nothing once it's delivered, or for more than a day if it isn't.
What it does
When you press the extension's button or its shortcut, or choose Make a page from this image, it takes a screenshot of the tab you're on (what's on screen, the area you drag out, the image you right-clicked, or the whole page, which it scrolls through and then scrolls back). When you've selected text there and choose What's on screen or Make a page from the selected text, it takes that text instead of a picture of it. When you choose This page's text, it reads the page's title, description, details it publishes for search engines and visible text. A whole page too long to fit in the pictures brings its text as well. It then opens programmable.page's capture screen and hands the picture to it. Nothing is sent until you choose what the picture is and press Make page there, signed in to your own account.
What it reads
- The screenshot you asked for, or the text you had selected or asked it to read, and the title and address of that tab, to label it. You can leave the address out on the capture screen; otherwise it's sent with the rest, so the page can link back.
- Whether you're signed in to programmable.page, when you open the extension, with your own session, so it can tell you before you capture. The answer isn't kept.
- Nothing else. It doesn't read pages in the background, track the sites you visit, read your cookies or passwords, or run on any page until you use it. Chrome only lets it see the tab you used it on (the
activeTabpermission).
When you open the extension's button, it also checks the tab you're on so it can offer only what will work: whether the tab is a PDF, and whether text is selected. That check gives a yes or no. It doesn't read the text, and nothing from it is kept or sent.
Where the screenshot goes
- Your browser: the extension keeps what it captured in its own storage on your device until the capture screen picks it up, then deletes it. If that doesn't happen it's deleted after a day, and you can discard it from the extension at any time.
- programmable.page: when you press Make page, the screenshot is sent to us with your session and passed to Anthropic's AI to make the page, as the Privacy Policy describes. We don't store the screenshot itself; the page made from it is kept in your workspace like any other page.
- No one else. The extension talks only to programmable.page, has no analytics or advertising, and we don't sell or share what it captures, or use it to train AI models.
Permissions it asks for
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
activeTab | To take a screenshot of the tab you used it on, or read the text you selected there, only when you use it. |
scripting | To show the drag-to-select overlay, find the image you right-clicked, and show a short confirmation on the page. |
contextMenus | For Make a page from this image on the right-click menu. |
storage | To hold a screenshot until the capture screen picks it up, and remember which server to send to. |
| Access to programmable.page | To hand the screenshot to the capture screen there. It runs on no other site. |
Your choices
Remove the extension at any time from Chrome's extensions page; that deletes anything it was holding. Pages you made stay in your workspace until you delete them. Questions: [email protected].
